Water-repellency is the first line of defence against wetness. It is exposed to the greatest stress from mechanical influences such as abrasion, as well as the effects of dirt and dust. Heavy rain and snowfall can wash away the water-repellency of the outer fabric. Even the best waterproofing wears off over time, depending on how intensively the jacket is used. Eventually, the outer fabric absorbs more and more rain, reducing breathability and making the functional jacket feel damp. It is easy to conclude that the jacket is leaking. However, the ‘damp feeling’ can be attributed to the diminishing effectiveness of the waterproofing. It is therefore a cycle that requires regular waterproofing to refresh the fabric. The right time to do this is at the latest when water no longer beads off the outer fabric but instead leaves a wet patch. The safest approach is to waterproof the garment again after washing.
